My Best April Fool's Joke

Let me tell you what happened to me on this day in 2004.

That morning my roommate, Stacie, and I joked around that we would pull an April Fool's day prank on our other roommate, Rachel. We discussed telling her that on my trip I was taking that afternoon to see my (then) boyfriend, Jeremy, he actually proposed to me. We thought that would be a great April Fool's joke.

Flash forward several hours.

I arrive in Tyler to spend the weekend with Jeremy. We had planned on celebrating our one year of dating. When I get there, Jeremy tells me that I have 45 minutes to get ready before he comes to pick me up. "Okay," I think. "I don't know if I can do that, but I'll try."

Jeremy picks me up at the house I always stayed in during visits. He then blindfolds me. Hmm... When we get to our destination, he walks and sits me down somewhere. When I finally can see, this is what is before me:

A table overlooking the lake set with candles, name cards, nice china, my favorite dessert, and the same exact meal from our first date! "This is so sweet to celebrate our first dating anniversary," I was thinking.

After dinner, Jeremy asks me if I want to watch the sunset (which is one of my favorite things). He walks me over to a swing and we watch the sky turn brilliant colors.

In front of the swing, I notice plants planted in an "I", a heart, and an "U". At the very top was a tulip, my absolute favorite flower!

As the sun is almost gone, Jeremy stands up and picks the tulip. I gasp and I am pretty sure I said, "You killed it!"

Jeremy lowered the tulip down to me and when I peaked inside, I noticed something sparkling! When I realized that it is a ring, I freeze with surprise. ( Yes, I really had no idea this was coming!) Jeremy then gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him!

My response? "Is this a joke?" Hello, it's April Fool's Day! Not to mention Stacie and I joked around early about this. After I got an "are you kidding me" look I said, "Of course." (To which this day Jeremy still teases me about.)

When I call my friends later, especially Stacie, they did not believe me. They all thought it was an April Fool's joke. I took pictures of the ring to email then just so they would believe me. :)

Four months later, Jeremy and I were married. The rest is history. :)

Great story. And just for the records, Jeremy, proposing on Aprils Fools Day is pretty courageous.

That is too funny--when I proposed to Maria on my birthday she responded with an, "I don't know what to say!" Really?! I still tease her about that one, too...and we were married 5 months later. I guess Jeremy and I wanted to make sure our wife didn't think we were joking after all! --Matt
